The Chief Duke Secretly Seeks the White Robe General

　　唐太宗要遠征高句麗前，夢見白袍將軍保駕戰勝高句麗而歸；此白袍將軍即後來的戰將薛仁貴。兵馬總管張士貴以女婿何宗憲假冒白袍將軍，設計欺騙薛仁貴，說皇帝要殺他，令其隱於軍中廚房當伙夫。在戰爭中，薛仁貴屢屢建功，但是都被張士貴將功勞記於何宗憲名下。

　　Before Tang Taizong was going to expedition to Goguryeo, he dreamed that the white-robed general protected him and defeated Goguryeo; this white-robed general was the later general Xue Rengui. The military and horse chief Zhang Shigui used his son-in-law He Zongxian to impersonate the white-robed general and designed to deceive Rengui, saying that the emperor wanted to kill him and make him hide in the kitchen of the army. In the war, Rengui repeatedly made contributions, but Zhang Shigui kept his contributions in the name of Zongxian.

　　有一天國公尉遲恭在兩軍交戰時發現白袍人，但在混亂中錯失了找到本尊的機會。又有一次遇敵軍埋伏，尉遲恭危急中得白袍人解救，想要前往認清為何人，還是錯過了。

　　One day the Chief Duke Wei Chigong found the white-robed man during the battle between the two armies, but missed the opportunity to find the white-robed man in the chaos. Once again, when the enemy was in ambush, Chigong was rescued by the white-robed man in a critical situation. He wanted to go to find out who he was, but he missed it again.

　　為此尉遲恭想清點軍中人員，找出白袍人。張士貴知道尉遲恭愛喝酒，就先將他灌醉，還沒點名完畢，尉遲恭就睡著了。張士貴還傳假消息說尉遲恭是要搜捕薛仁貴，薛仁貴因而逃離軍營，所以最後尉遲恭並沒有查出誰是白袍將軍。

　　For this reason, Chigong wanted to count the personnel in the army and find the white-robed ones. Zongxian knew that Chigong Gong loved to drink, so he got him drunk first. Before the call was finished, Chigong Gong fell asleep. Zongxian also spread false news that Chigong was going to search for Rengui, and Rengui fled the barracks, so in the end, Chigong did not find out who was the general in white robe.

　　張士貴本名忽峍，為唐代名將。在關於薛仁貴的民間小說中，張士貴被描寫為陷害薛仁貴的奸臣並非事實，其女婿何宗憲冒領薛仁貴功勞也沒有任何證據。

　　薛仁貴少時以種田謀生。唐太宗貞觀十九年下令遠征高句麗，將軍張士貴招募士兵，薛仁貴應募從軍。攻打過程中郎將劉君昂為敵軍圍困，薛仁貴前往救援，斬敵將首級，綁在馬鞍上，震懾敵軍，由此知名。後來高句麗又派二十萬大軍進擊，薛仁貴自恃驍勇欲立奇功，便穿上異於眾人的白色衣甲戰於軍陣之中，果然所向披靡而得到太宗賞識，升為游擊將軍，後又將其升遷右領軍中郎將，鎮守玄武門；白袍將軍一說由此而來。
